Japan's Joshinetsu Kogen National Park (Jigokudani Monkey Park) is a mythical place. I have a dreamy, “was-that-even-real?” memory of my visit, akin to scratching the back of my brain to remember a lucid dream several days later. Our bus tour drove us deep into a snowy forest, tranquil and seemingly abandoned. Our guide packed us in parkas and snow boots and off we crunched, hiking & hushed - afraid to break the forest’s spell - through miles of winding paths of pristine, untouched snow. And then, down in the valley beneath us, there they were – a hundred plus snow monkeys, lounging in the thermal pools as if they'd been expecting us all along. The sight was so surreal, so captivating, that it felt like emerging into a magical storybook. These charming creatures, with their expressive faces and human-like behavior, created countless "wow" moments for my family and me. We watched as they splashed playfully or sat in quiet contemplation, their red faces surrounded by tawny fur, so like our fur-lined parka hoods. One particular baby held me captivated as she nervously detached from her mother and aunts, dipping her toes in the steaming water and glancing back, seeking the wisdom and guidance of her elders, before gathering her courage to wade slowly beneath the surface. This place is more than just a tourist spot; it’s an experience that left us with enchanted memories, still wrapped in a snowy shroud of cold mountain fog.
