Meet The Ocean Cleanup

At Bespoke Legacy Luxury Travel, we understand deeply that travel directly impacts our rivers and oceans. That's why we're excited to introduce you to our donation partner The Ocean Cleanup, a groundbreaking initiative that's revolutionizing the fight against marine plastic pollution. Their mission resonates deeply with our commitment to sustainable travel, offering a unique perspective on how we can positively impact the environments we visit, even as we indulge in luxury experiences.

The Ocean Cleanup, founded in 2013 by then-nineteen year old Dutch inventor Boyan Slat, is developing and scaling technologies to rid the world's oceans of plastic. Their approach is twofold: halting the flow of trash from rivers and removing existing plastics from the oceans. The organization's goal is ambitious - to achieve a 90% reduction of floating ocean plastic by 2040.

The Ocean Cleanup employs two main systems:

  1. Ocean Systems: These are designed to clean up the massive ocean garbage patches, focusing on removing plastic before it breaks down into harmful microplastics.
  2. Interceptors™: These systems are deployed in rivers, targeting the 1% of rivers that account for 80% of the plastic flowing into oceans from land.

One initiative by The Ocean Cleanup that we find truly commendable is the creation of the Ocean Plastic Standard. This standard, developed in collaboration with DNV (an independent global verification body), aims to ensure transparency and traceability in products made from ocean plastic. The standard follows a chain of custody model that verifies three main components: material integrity, traceability, and mass balance. This means that when you purchase a product made from ocean plastic, you can trust that it genuinely comes from cleanup efforts in the ocean.

The Ocean Cleanup's approach to solving the ocean plastic problem is comprehensive and innovative. They not only work on cleaning up existing pollution but also strive to prevent future pollution. Their efforts extend beyond physical cleanup to include research, product development, and setting industry standards.

As travelers concerned about sustainability, supporting organizations like The Ocean Cleanup can be a meaningful way to contribute to ocean conservation. While we can practice responsible travel by reducing our plastic use and properly disposing of waste, The Ocean Cleanup tackles the problem on a larger scale, addressing the massive amounts of plastic already in our oceans and rivers.

By understanding and supporting such initiatives, we can make more informed choices in our travels and daily lives, contributing to the health of our oceans and the sustainability of our planet.
